RoboCop Reboot

Okay action movie fans for this installment of “When
You Say Action” let’s talk about the upcoming reboot of “RoboCop.”
For those fans unfamiliar with this classic action
series, let’s take a jump back in time to the very first “RoboCop” movie. The
first movie came out on July 17, 1987 and its success sparked a franchise,
including merchandise, two sequels, a television series, two animated TV
series, a television mini-series, video games, a number of comic book
adaptations and crossovers.
“Robocop” is about a policeman in the near future working
in a crime ridden Detroit. The main character, Alex Murphy, is portrayed by
Peter Weller (“24”). After being gunned down and left for dead Murphy is
brought back to life in a cybernetic shell. He is dubbed RoboCop by OCP (Omni Consumer Products) and has no memory of his past. After several successful
tests RoboCop is ready to clean up the streets of crime but soon he starts
remembering that he was Alex Murphy. Murphy must track down those who killed
him and bring them to justice.
Now since 2000 when the television miniseries “RoboCop
Prime Detectives” (which are on Netflix by the way along with all three movies)
was released it was the last time we heard from Robo. MGM and Sony have
announced that they are working on a reboot of the franchise for 2014 with
director José Padilha (“Elite Squad”).
Taking on the role Alex Murphy, aka RoboCop, will be Joel Kinnaman. Fans may remember Kinnaman from the hit AMC (America Movie Classics)
TV show “The Killing” as Detective Holder. To be honest, this is an interesting
choice for Robo. Kinnaman doesn’t really scream action star to this blogger but
I’m not saying he’s not a great actor. In the past we’ve seen Kinnaman in more
serious roles from “The Darkest Hour” to “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.”
Kinnaman is going to have big shoes, or in this case robotic cyborg shoes, to fill
for this film to match up to the first one.
With Kinnaman as the lead star, this film also has
other big name stars to help make it a box office success. Other stars include
Samuel L. Jackson, (“The Avengers”), Gary Oldman (“The Darknight Rises”) and
even Abbie Cornish (“Sucker Punch”). Hugh Laurie (“House”) was originally cast
in mid-June 2012 for the part of the CEO of OCP but according to imdb.com he
dropped the project in August 2012. MGM and Sony quickly replaced him however
with Michael Keaton (“Batman”) filling the role.
While looking through the cast list on imdb.com
however no is one set to play RoboCop’s partner Officer Anne Lewis. Nancy Allen
who was in the original 1976 version of the movie “Carrie” portrayed Lewis in
the earlier films. So far nothing has been released yet if Robo will have a new
partner or no partner at all for the film.
There have been a few stories online and videos
YouTube being released that takes us inside this upcoming remake. Apparently
Robo is getting an all new look for this film. Instead of the silver robotic
armor and helmet we are used to seeing him this film will present Robo in a
black robotic armor.

Kinnaman gives fans some insight to this look as well in
an MTV (Music Television Interview). “There’s not going to be any twitchy robot
[he mimics very mechanical robotic moves]. Our vision of how a robot is going
to be in 2046, it’s going to be a very human skin, it’s gonna look very human.
I’m going to be able to put my signature on the body language, too….from an acting
standpoint, walking around just moving your jaw, it’s not so interesting. So
this is going to be an opportunity to really bring a full performance to it”
said Kinnaman.
The videos on YouTube also give us a look at Robo new
ride. In the previous films he always drove a Ford Tarus police car but now
Robo will be driving a black police crotch rocket.
Fans are excited and skeptical as well for this
upcoming remake is set to be released to the box office on February 7, 2014.
