The Equalizer! Denzel at his Best!
It’s been awhile since we’ve have seen
Denzel Washington in a movie since he stared in “2 Guns” with co star MarkWalburg. "The Equalizer" is by far his best work in the action movie genre.
Based on the 80’s TV
show “The Equalizer” starring Edward Woodward, the Equalizer at the beginning
of the film seems like your normal everyday person. 9 to 5 job, friendly, and
you would never expect of what kind of dark past he had. Once Washington’s
character befriended a girl named Terri (“Chole Grace Motez”) who was under the
control of some ultra violent Russian gangsters who almost kill her. Washington
decides to take matters into his own hands and the life he thought he left
behind will have to be his greatest weapon against the Russians.
Watching this whole
movie the story felt very dark and mysterious. As the story unfolds and
Washington starts taking out bad guys with ease, you find yourself trying to
figure out what the Equalizer’s back story is.
How did he come to possess such skills to be a killing machine? The
world in this movie starts out normal, but once the killing starts Washington’s
character discovers the cruel and dark world of the Russian mob.
The characters do a
great job drawing you into this movie. From Washington, Motez, the bad guys to the main villain played by Martin Csokas whose
character has the dark calm get the job done no matter what feel to his
character. He was cunning, smart, and a complete psychopath when needed. I
really enjoyed his and Washington’s chemistry on screen especially the one screen
where both characters are sitting across from each other in a restaurant. This
is when both characters realize who they are both dealing with and there is
only one outcome for their feud to end.
Okay I have to talk
about the final confrontation between Washington and the Russian Mob. We find
out Washington’s character works in a Home Depot kind of store and this where the
final 20 minutes of the film get really cool. Washington takes out bad guys
left and right with your typical handy man tools. Then when it came down to the
Csokas and Washington showdown, it felt like very powerful scene and gave new
meaning to the term, “nail gun”!
All in all, this is
Washington’s best work since “Training Day”. I give this movie a 10 out 10 on
my favorite action movie scale.
